Senate Committee of the Whole has decided to draft a resolution within two weeks regarding revival of students unions in the educational institutions in the country. The resolution would also include recommendations of the Senators. The Committee of the Whole of the Upper House was held in the Chairmanship of Mian Raza Rabbani in Parliament House, today to deliberate upon a way forward for restoration of student bodies in academic establishments.

Raza Rabbani remarked that Supreme Court’s judgement in 1993 prohibiting formation of student unions does not bar the Senate to legislate in the said matter. He said that successive governments have restricted the revival of traditional student politics and took shelter in the judicial verdict.

Participating in the discussion, Senator Farhatullah Babar stressed on examining all the aspects for revival of student unions. He suggested legislation in this regard confined within federal capital, asserting that it would set precedent for the provinces to follow. Senator Babar Awan was of the view that abolishing basic academy of politics resulted in incursion of industrialists in the national and regional politics. He proposed a resolution passed by the House for its revival. Senator Hasil Bazinjo refuted the blame of spreading violence in colleges and varsities by the student unions. Senator Nehal Hashmi advocated for restoration of such bodies while calling them an integral part of democratic norms. Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed sketched historical context of student politics and its role during Pakistan movement. Senator Kareem Khwaja suggested to look for experiences of such bodies in foreign countries and said that democratic norms need to be flourished and student unions could support it. Senator Taj Haider strongly encouraged the proposal of restoring student unions, while, Senator Usman Kakar proposed to hold a seminar for further deliberations on the subject.

Senators Mian Ateeq, Shahi Syed, General (R) Abdul Qayoom, ChaudhryTanvir, Javed Abbasi, Deputy Chairman Molana Abdul Ghaforr Haideri, Nisar Muhammad, Sardar Azam Khan Musa Khel, General (R) Salahuddin Tirmizi, Mir Kabir Ahmad Muhammad Shahi, Saleem Zia, Ayesha Raza Farooq, and other also expressed their thoughts about the revival of student unions.
